David Schwing “Dave” is a Licensed Clinical Social Worker who has been in private psychotherapy practice in Manhattan since 1996. He specializes in individual, couples and group therapy across the spectrum of sexual orientations and gender identities. He has a range of expertise that includes affirmative psychotherapy, addiction, sexual compulsivity, trauma, depression, anxiety disorders, HIV and other health-related concerns, and aging.
His therapeutic treatment style is relational and interpersonal therapy- working with integrating systemic approaches, gestalt approaches, somatic and humanistic psychotherapy, as well as EMDR techniques addressing trauma.
A graduate of Columbia University’s Masters program in the School of Social Work, Dave studied with group therapy professor and guru Alex Gitterman, opening a pathway for his postgraduate study and specialization in group work. In the late 1990’s he became familiar with the work of Yvonne Agazarian and spent the next 16 years studying closely with Yvonne in NY, Philadelphia, and the UK, and developed a vibrant group therapy practice in New York City. In his early training he worked with the chronically mentally ill population at a New York State Psychiatric Hospital, provided social work helping patients with serious hospitalizations return to their homes and communities with a Home Care agency, and developed expertise in working with alcohol and substance abuse and prevention in a Community Based Organization.
